The Identity Trap That's Sabotaging Your Leadership Potential
Why successful leaders get stuck and how to break free from the prison of past versions of yourself
You've climbed the ladder. Earned the respect. Built the reputation.
So why does success feel like a trap?
If you're a high-achieving leader feeling stuck despite external accomplishments, you might be caught in what I call the Identity Preservation Paradox – clinging to the version of yourself that got you here while your soul yearns for who you're becoming.
The $300 and Hair Dryer Moment
At 21, I sat in a Toyota Camry with everything I owned crammed in the backseat, including a vintage hood hair dryer (because priorities). I was about to drive away from everything familiar – my family business, my religious community, the identity of being "the 11th child who follows the rules."
That drive to Minneapolis changed everything. Not because I had a plan, but because I finally released an identity that was suffocating me.
The Leadership Identity Crisis No One Talks About
Here's what I've discovered after coaching hundreds of leaders through transitions: We cling to identities that once served us long after they've become our prison.
The reliable one who can't say no. The technical expert who struggles to delegate.
The high performer drowning in perfectionism.
These identities feel safe because they're familiar. They're how others see us. How we see ourselves.
But when growth calls – when you feel that pull toward something more – these old identities become the very thing holding you back.
The Courage to Release Your Former Self
Real leadership development isn't about adding new skills to your existing identity.
It's about having the courage to let go of the version of yourself that got you here.
Because the person who got you to director level isn't the same person who will thrive as VP.
The manager who succeeded through individual contribution must transform to lead through others.
Each promotion requires an identity release.
What's Possible When You Pack Your Bags
When you stop trying to be who you were, you can start discovering who you're becoming.
Your energy increases because you're no longer fighting yourself. Opportunities appear because you're visible as your authentic self. Your leadership becomes magnetic because people trust leaders who know who they are.
The Activation Moment
Right now, there's an identity you're clinging to that's keeping you small.
The question isn't whether you're ready for your next level.
The question is whether you're ready to release who you were.
Sometimes the most courageous thing you can do is pack your metaphorical car and drive toward the person you're meant to be.
Even if all you have is faith and the willingness to figure out the rest.
